Library Services

Sapienza Department of Environmental Biology Library

The library provides the following services:

  • consultation
  • local loan
  • interlibrary loan
  • document delivery
  • reference (bibliographic information, guidance, user assistance)
  • online services via catalogue
  • Internet access for study and/or research purposes
  • reproductions (on site or off site) within legal limits
  • communication and promotion of services

To access the services, users must register with the library. Students who are in good standing with their administrative status are automatically registered with the Sapienza Library System. They must therefore only complete their registration with the library staff upon their first visit to the library. External users will be registered by the library staff by filling out an online form with their personal data, which will be processed in accordance with current privacy regulations. From the moment of registration, or its completion, users may access services in all Sapienza libraries.

PC Consultation
Nine computers are available and can be used via wireless connection. All library spaces are covered by Sapienza’s wireless network, which allows web access through authentication using Infostud credentials.

Loan
The loan service allows the library to make its documentary collections available to users.

Local loan
The local loan service allows users to borrow material owned by the library free of charge and use it outside the library’s reading rooms for a specified number of days.

Interlibrary loan
Interlibrary loan is available for all libraries that request it, as part of reciprocal exchange agreements. The loan period is 30 days. The interlibrary loan service may require reimbursement of shipping costs. Library staff will inform the requesting library or user in advance so they can decide whether to accept the charges.

The following users are eligible for loans:

  1. institutional users, upon presentation of an ID document;
  2. external users who, for study and/or research purposes, need to use the service.

The following categories of works are excluded from loan and therefore may only be consulted on the library premises:
a) rare or particularly valuable material;
b) reference works (dictionaries, encyclopedias, bibliographic repertoires, atlases);
c) works in poor physical condition;
d) periodical publications.

The loan period is 15 days. Two renewals of 10 days each are allowed. Renewal must be requested before the loan’s due date and is granted if the item has not been reserved by another user. It is possible to reserve an item that is on loan at the time of request. Users who have reserved a loaned document will be notified when it is returned and will have 2 days to collect it. Local loans are recorded using the centralised automated service management system.

Document delivery via NILDE
Register here. The library provides all registered users with a document search and delivery service through the Nilde network. You may submit requests for bibliographic material to the library from any device. Waiting times are generally short, and communication between users and the library occurs directly through the service interface. Documents are delivered to users in compliance with copyright legislation and publisher licence agreements. The service is free of charge and available Monday to Friday, 9:00–19:00.

Reference
The Library carries out several activities aimed at meeting the information and knowledge needs of its users. These concern the organisation, access, and evaluation of information resources, as well as user assistance and consultation in retrieving information and documents. To this end, the Library is committed to providing and keeping up to date the tools necessary for research and to assisting users both in person and remotely.

Photocopying of documents available in the library
Personal-use photocopies of articles or excerpts from works are permitted in compliance with current copyright legislation. Valuable material that may be damaged may only be reproduced with the authorisation of the library director, in compliance with copyright legislation and subject to any specific limitations applying to the use of the item. All other publications in the library may be taken for the time needed for photocopying.

Safeguards for material used in consultation, local loan, and interlibrary loan services
Loans are personal. Users are responsible for the documents borrowed and for their integrity, must return them by the due date, and must respond promptly to any reminders.
Users authorised for loan must notify the library of any change in residence, address, telephone number, or email address.

Obligations and penalties for late returns, damage, or loss of material
Users who fail to return items on time will receive a first reminder. After three reminders, they will be suspended from local and interlibrary loan services in all Sapienza Libraries until their situation is resolved, except in more serious cases that may result in indefinite exclusion. Users who damage or lose a borrowed document must replace it; replacement, at the discretion of the library director, may be done with another copy of the same edition or with a copy of a different edition, provided it is equally complete and of commercial value not lower than that of the original document.
